In a recent email scam, the Goliath and Goliath entertainment agency lost R300 000 while its subsidiary, PR Bailiff, lost R20 000.
That’s a lot of money for most business owners in South Africa, and we believe that email scam incidents like these can be avoided.
It has been reported that Goliath and Goliath emails were intercepted by hackers who then changed the banking details on invoices sent, before forwarding the invoices to clients.
The clients would then pay the invoices, unaware of the fact that the emails and invoices have been tampered with. The invoices that were intercepted range between R60 000 and R130 000 that were paid into the hackers’ account.
Scams like these are becoming more and more popular and can sometimes be difficult to spot. Had it not been for a sharp-eyed client who spotted a change in the banking details, Goliath and Goliath could have been out of pocket even more.
